Devil's Soupbowl
Yankee Springs Recreation Area
The
Devil's Soup Bowl is found inside the Yankee Springs
Recreation Area.
The Park is over 5,000 acres and is popular for metal
detecting, hiking, biking, cross country skiing,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing are popular winter
activities. There is camping at Gun Lake and even room for
horses. The terrain in some areas is rugged and includes
bogs, marshes, lakes and streams.
One of the unique features for southern Michigan is the
Devil’s Soup Bowl. The bowl is a huge, glacially carved bowl
in the earth that was formed about 10-13,000 years ago.
These formations are actually "kettle" lakes. A trail winds
to the bottom of the formation to provide a unique look at
an unusual area.
A hiking trail winds around the bog area at the South end of Deep Lake, continues across open fields and old farm homesteads, and leads to the Devil's Soup Bowl where it winds around the little Soup Bowl and returns by the trail North of Deep Lake. The trail starts across from the Yankee Springs Campground.
Mountain biking is not allowed into the bowl, the slopes are too steep and no riding trails descend into it. You can ride around the rim of the Devil’s Soup Bowl on the Yankee Springs Deep Lake Trail. You can hike down into the bowl if you are fit enough for it. The depth is approximately 100 feet on a steep grade.
