The
Loop - Harrison House is a Second Empire style mansion that was built in
the 1870's by Doctor
Joseph Loop and now houses the Port Sanilac Historical Museum. Doctor
Loop and his wife, Jane
Garner Loop, pioneered the site in the 1850's and he opened a medical
practice in Port Sanilac. One
of his descendants, Captain Stanley Harrison deeded the building to the
Sanilac County Historical Society for a museum in 1964.
In addition the grounds contain a General Store, the 157 year old Huckins one room school house and one of the last remaining Historic Barn Theatres in Michigan. There are several other buildings and permanent exhibits including a marine shipwreck room. The grounds and gardens are worth a coming here on their own. The gardens are Victorian in style and design and are the envy of the locals.
