The
Howmet Playhouse theatre is unique in several ways. It is one of
only a handful of theatres that was constructed with a plaster "Kappeldome".
This feature, named after a German theatre designer, enhances acoustics
and ensures that voices are projected throughout the theatre.
We owe the continued existence of this treasure to the City of Whitehall. Seems that all of our theatres fall on hard times and in 1973 this one was in danger of demolition. The folks at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp acquired and renovated the Howmet Playhouse building and put out productions until recently when it was acquired by the City of Whitehall, Mi. There were several fabulous programs in the 2007-2008 winter season and several more are planned for summer.
The Howmet Playhouse offers an intimate 400-seat venue for lyric and musical theatre, jazz, blues, folk and classical concerts, screen presentations, fundraisers and business meetings. The playhouse produces our own professional theatre, but is also available for touring artists, promoters and rental for special events. The acoustics at the Howmet Playhouse are among the best in Western Michigan.
