Fife Lake, Michigan.
Fife Lake is an authentic Northern
Michigan village founded in 1872. The village began as a
lumbering town, fueled by the operation of the Grand
Rapids and Indiana Railroad. Today, there are many ways
for visitors to step back into the past and learn about
our rich history while enjoying a full service resort
community. Visitors can experience the unique
history of Fife Lake first hand by going on the Fife
Lake Historical Walk. The tour includes 27 display
plaques throughout the village with wonderful historic
photographs and a short write-up identifying a variety
of historical buildings and sites. Brochures, including
a map of the Historic Walk, are available at the
historical museum and the Fife Lake Public Library.
Then there is Fife Lake. If you aren't a history buff, maybe the lake will be the thing. Over 600 acres with a depth of up to 60 feet, this is a beautiful body of water. There is plenty of swimming and boating but for fishermen this is a paradise particularly if you want to catch gigantic perch. The water is clear and of excellent quality. There are two islands in the lake and one has an artificial walleye spawning reef constructed in the 1950's. Ice fishing is popular here.
Inside many of the local businesses are
historic photos and displays that tell the story of the
village. Several of the original structures are standing
and in use today. The photographs were all taken during
the last quarter of the 19th century and the first
quarter of the 20th century. The size and diversity of
this photo collection is worth the trip just for the
candid shots of village life.
