The Upper Peninsula
Terrific Towns are perfect places to visit when you need a break from the fun stops on the back roads. Not just fun destinations, these are pro-active towns that are great places to live.
The upper peninsula of Michigan is actually several different regions. Nearly every town has some spectacular scenery or historic site worth visiting.
Escanaba - Manistique - Ontonagon -
Cedarville - Hessel - Crystal Falls
The Water Tower & Museum in Manistique is one of the most unusual museums in the upper peninsula. Not only is this a spectacular building, you can learn about the old siphon bridge that used to function here.
There is a great drive from St. Ignace north, The Mackinac Trail
Another favorite drive of mine is what I call the The Waterfall Drive . You can leave Gladstone for a nice easy road trip and visit five different waterfalls in the space of an afternoon. Some can be seen without getting out of your car and one isn't on any map I have seen.
All of these waterfalls are on paved roads except Laughing Whitefish falls.
