The Boyne City Road hugs the north shore of Lake Charlevoix. Between Charlevoix and Horton Bay is where you will find Dunmaglas. The entrance is a simple parking lot next to an unassuming pro shop. Hidden in the hills and woodlands beyond the practice green is a golf course that should be on every players list.  Ranked as one of the Best 50 Upscale Courses in the United States by Golf Digest, this 6,897-yard masterpiece features 18 of the most scenic and breathtaking holes you will ever play.

They describe this as golf in its purest form and they may be right. Every single hole on this golf course is a work of art. Teeing it up on number one the player will know immediately that a great round of golf is coming up. The very first hole has an elevated tee that over looks a fairway surrounded by hills and trees. A beautiful stream meanders along the left side of the fairway. The green is reached around a gentle dogleg. As on nearly every hole on this course the player can only see the hole being played. Occassionaly, you can see more than one hole from the tee, but usually you are secluded from everything except the hole you are playing.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but these pictures struggle to give the full impact of the beauty of this course.  The course features generous landing areas on lush fairways, but be sure to hit those fairways. Accuracy is essential and wayward shots will be in deep rough or deep woods.  The course has numerous elevation changes and several holes feature a blind tee shot. The tee shot on number five is a perfect example. There are lots of doglegs and one often has an uneven lie for the second shot. The greens are often on a different elevation from the fairway and there are the bunkers that will capture the errant shot.

The greens are big enough to present a fair target. They are full of undulations and breaks, but will hold the approach shot and putt fast and true. In addition to the natural beauty on each hole there are some spectacular views of the hills and Lake Charlevoix in the distance. The scenery along numbers 4, 5, and 6 is unrivaled and the view from the 14th tee must rank in the top 4 or 5 anywhere in Michigan. I can hardly wait to play this again.
