Loons in Michigan

Many thanks to the www.upnorthgift.com company in Bitely, Michigan for sponsoring this page.

Loon in MichiganLoons have fascinated since our earliest memories.  Their haunting calls heard during the early dawn hours speak to us of wilderness beauty and times past.  Dressed up with deep red eyes and a necklace, loons can swim under water fast enough to catch fish and their wings are powerful enough to take them thousands of miles on their annual migrations.

Loons have played a part in ancient cultures around the world.  One legend tells about loons curing blindness in children by carrying the blind person to the bottom of the lake over and over until the blindness is washed away.  It is said that one grateful person made the loon a necklace of shells in gratitude that can be seen in the neck feathers to this day.

Loons swimmingThe loon is also known as the "Rain Crow" because it is said that its call will bring the rains.  Loons can live up to thirty years if they can make it past the first couple of years.  Loon calls have various purposes and include the Yodel, Hoot, Tremolo and the Wail.  They all will bring back memories of camping trips to the lake in "up north" Michigan.
