The
Lake of the Clouds is located in the Porcupine Mountains State Park near
Ontonagon, Michigan. Several hundred acres of old growth forest
surround this incredible treasure. A short hike from the parking
area will take you to spots where you can enjoy the spectacular view.
At any time of year this spot will inspire the artist and nature lover
in all of us.
The lake is a prominent feature of the park, and can be viewed at the Lake of the Clouds Overlook at the west terminus of Michigan highway M-107. The lake is fed from the east end by the Carp River Inlet and the outflow from the western end is the Carp River, which empties into Lake Superior on the boundary between Ontonagon and Gogebic County. The Porcupine Mountains are a group of small mountains spanning across the northwestern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, near the shore of Lake Superior. The area is part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The Porcupine Mountains were named by the native Ojibwa people, supposedly because their silhouette had the shape of a porcupine.
