The simple exterior conceals a gorgeous tasting room. The original tin ceilings and tin walls have been preserved. Beautiful dark wood fixtures, wine racks and vineyard murals combine to create a warm ambiance in all seasons. Our tasting room is situated in a historical building built in 1893 that’s part of the historic district of old Escanaba. It features an older refurbished bar and a back bar done in art deco style. The walls and ceiling are intricately designed tin dating back to 1895. Leigh's Garden Winery, Inc., features wines made from cold climate grapes and a variety of northern grown fruit. The tasting room is on the first floor above the basement winery and is handicapped accessible to Ludington Street, the main shopping district in Escanaba.
Nesting Bird Vineyard is located on flat terrain. The soil is comprised of a 12 to 18 inch layer of mineral alluvial topsoil on top of a bed of clay. The water table supplies ground water to the deep roots of the vines as does the natural amount of rain so that watering the vineyard is not required except in severe drought. All work, with the exception of tilling, is done by hand so the vineyardist and winemaker are in close association with the grapes and vines. Initial pruning is delayed in the spring to provide buds with a late break out after early spring frosts.
